Offensive Woes Foil Tigers’ Defensive Efforts, 50-33

OXFORD, Miss. — The LSU men’s basketball team scored the fewest points in 53 years after shooting 28 percent from the field and committing 25 turnovers in a 50-33 loss to 25th-ranked Ole Miss on Wednesday night in Oxford, Miss.

LSU fell to 11-9 overall and 1-8 in Southeastern Conference play, while Ole Miss moved into a tie for first place in the SEC West at 6-3 in league play and 18-4 overall.

The 33 points scored by the Tigers was the lowest since LSU was held to 32 against Alabama in the final regular season game in the 1947-48 season on March 1, 1948, in Baton Rouge. LSU scored 31 in a neutral site (Houston) loss to Texas earlier that season. The last time the Tigers scored less than 33 on the road was Feb. 2, 1945, when LSU lost to Tulane, 44-32.

After trailing only 19-15 at halftime, LSU cut the Ole Miss lead to 23-22 with 15:12 remaining and possession of the ball. Then, at the 12:50 mark, LSU was still within three, 27-24. However, 7-0 and 8-0 runs by Ole Miss over the next eight minutes expanded the Rebel lead to as much as 19.

Three of LSU’s five scholarship players — Brian Beshara, Torris Bright and Collis Temple III — combined for only 2-of-21 shooting from the field. Ronald Dupree scored 14 to lead the way for LSU, while Jason Wilson added seven.

LSU returns home to face Auburn at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Maravich Assembly Center.
