ATHENS, Ga. — Bruna Colosio, the Lady Tigers’ 44th-ranked women’s tennis player, advanced to Monday’s championship match of the 2001 Georgia Invitational by defeating both Zsofia Golopencza of Armstrong Atlantic State and Georgia’s Lori Grey on Sunday here in Athens, Ga.
“Bruna is playing like a champion out there,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “She looked really good today, and I like her chances tomorrow in the championship match. Win or lose, this tournament has definitely helped her to get geared up for the dual-match season.”
Colosio, the second seed of the ninth-annual Georgia Invitational, was victorious over Armstrong Atlantic State’s 28th-ranked (NCAA Div. II) Golopencza in the quarterfinal round of the singles tournament with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
In the semifinals, Colosio faced the third-seeded Grey from Georgia. It turned out to be Colosio’s third-straight three-set match of the weekend, but once again the junior from LSU was too strong in the final set and was victorious, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Colosio will face Tonya Grib, the fifth-seeded player in the tournament from Brenau University of Gainesville, Ga.
Grib, the No. 1-ranked NAIA player (tied) in the nation and member of the 2000 national runner-up team at Brenau, advanced to the final by defeating Georgia’s 26th-ranked Anne Nguyen, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinal round. Nguyen was the No. 1-seeded singles player in the event. She named the “Player to Watch” at the 2000 NAIA National Championships.
“It’s going to be a great match tomorrow,” Minnis said. “Grib is a very competitive player and has been playing extremely well in this tournament, and so has Bruna.”
The championship match of the 2001 Georgia Invitational is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (Central time) in the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Center here in Athens, Ga.
