ATHENS, Ga. — LSU’s 44th-ranked women’s tennis player, Bruna Colosio, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2001 Georgia Inviatational on Saturday with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, win over Kentucky’s Carolina Mayorga at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Center here in Athens, Ga.
“Bruna has been playing some very good tennis in this tournament,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Today, it took her a little while to get on track, but when she did, it was fun to watch. Her shoulder has really healed well, and she looks as good as ever.”
After dropping the first set to Mayorga, the Lady Tigers’ Colosio fought back to sweep the final two sets of the match, 6-3, 6-2, to win the right to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Colosio advances to face freshman Zsofia Golopencza (Budapest, Hungary) of Division II Armstrong Atlantic State (Savannah, Ga.), who upset Mississippi State’s 73rd-ranked Amelie Detriviere, 6-4, 7-6 (6), in the third round.
In the first round of singles consolation play,
Uymi Ueda of Mississippi State defeated LSU’s Amy McIlhaney, 6-4, 6-0.
The 2001 Georgia Invitational will resume Sunday morning at 9 a.m. (Central time) and will conclude with the Championship matches in the late afternoon.
