ORLANDO, Fla. — The LSU dance team, the Tiger Girls, finished fifth and the LSU Cheerleading squad finished seventh in the finals of the 2001 College Cheerleading and Dance National Championships held at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday.
Both teams received automatic bids to the final rounds based on a pair of fourth-place performances in last year’s championships. Kentucky won the 13-team cheerleading competition while Long Beach State won the 16-team dance competition.
According to a Varsity.com report, the Tiger Cheerleaders opened their routine with three double cupies that mysteriously appear from the back and running tumbling down the center. Team standing tucks was the next exciting skill executed, followed by full-up squad stretches, four double twisting baskets transition into two flyover toss trophy pyramids — a very original skill that ends up in a two-high pyramid.
A little difficulty on the left with back tucks and an “X out” basket begin the cheer portion of the routine. Two full-up 2-2-1’s and signs were used.? Toss full-up torches opened the next music portion, with a creative around the back over the shoulder half twisting toss up stretch, and then three handstand pyramids showed excellent technique. LSU ended its routine with two 2-1-1 inside stag pyramids that attached to a torch pyramid in the middle.
On Thursday, three LSU pairs placed in the Top 10 of the Coed Partner Stunt National Championship, including a national championship performance by Kelly Steiger and Chad Price. Fellow Tiger cheerleaders Nancy Lambert and Jason Galjour finished fifth in the Partner Stunt Championship, while Jennifer Arton and Ryan Smith finished eighth.
According to a Varsity.com report, the Tiger Girls began their routine with a spread out opening formation. They then moved into fast intricate movements with the music before executing their pirouettes with great body control and position. A bowling pin formation brought a costume change and a hip hop theme.
