BATON ROUGE — The 11th-ranked LSU women’s basketball team will look for its first Southeastern Conference win of the year on Sunday when they take on No. 17 Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., at 2 p.m.
LSU (9-4, 0-1 SEC) is coming off an 89-70 loss at the hands of No. 2 Tennessee on Thursday night. Mississippi State (9-3, 0-1) fell to 12th-ranked Florida 82-70 at home, also on Thursday.
The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net and can be seen in Baton Rouge on cable channel 26. It can be heard on the radio in Baton Rouge on WTGE 107.3-FM or on the internet at www.LSUsports.net.
The Lady Tigers own a 28-4 record all time against the Lady Bulldogs, which includes wins in the last seven contests. All of Mississippi State’s wins in the series have come on their home court as LSU has a 10-4 mark in Starkville.
The game will feature two of the top players in the conference in Marie Ferdinand for LSU and LaToya Thomas for Mississippi State. Thomas is the league’s leading scorer, with 24.9 points/game, and rebounder, with 9.6 rebounds/game. Ferdinand ranks third in the conference with a 20.8 points/game average.
LSU is expected to start Ferdinand (3.2 apg), a 5-9 senior, and 5-11 senior Angelia Crockett (2.1 ppg, 3.2 apg) at the guards, 5-11 senior April Brown (11.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and 5-11 freshman Roneeka Hodges (11.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg) at the forwards, and 5-11 junior DeTrina White (9.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) at center.
Thomas will lead frontcourt for the Lady Bulldogs. She will be joined 6-0 junior Jennifer Fambrough (14.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and 5-9 sophomore Keisha Stringfellow (4.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg) at the forward position. Cynthia Hall (7.6 ppg, 4.5 apg), a 5-6 senior, and Meadow Overstreet (7.3 ppg, 3.0 apg), a 5-7 senior, will start at guard.
The Mississippi State game is the second game in a tough January stretch for LSU as the Lady Tigers faced No. 2 Tennessee on Thursday. Next week, they return home for bouts with conference-rival Arkansas and fourth-ranked Georgia.
