Tigers Set to Take on Talented McNeese St. Squad

BATON ROUGE — The LSU Tigers put several long winning streaks on the line Wednesday when they play host to the McNeese State Cowboys at 7 p.m. in the Maravich Assembly Center.

Tickets for the game are available at and at the Assembly Center box office beginning two hours prior to game time.

The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Network (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and on the Internet at In the Baton Rouge area, the game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by the Pelican Sports Network on KTTE-TV (Channel 11) on Thursday at 1 and 7 p.m.

The Tigers own a 10-game winning streak in the Assembly Center dating back to the last seven of a year ago and a win over McNeese would give this current Tiger team a tie for the seventh longest streak in Assembly Center history with the 1985-86 team. The Tigers have also won 22 straight non-conference games in the Assembly Center and are 26-1 in non-conference games at home in the John Brady era.

This is the second of four games against Louisiana opposition with LSU having already defeated Louisiana-Monroe in the opener on Nov. 20 to run its streak to 32 straight against Louisiana four-year schools. LSU’s last loss to a state school was a 111-109 decision to Louisiana Tech in Dec. 1988.

LSU is coming off an 89-57 decision over Texas Southern on Saturday in which LSU broke the game open in the second half with a remarkably clean performance. The Tigers shot 63 percent in the half and didn’t turn the ball over in the first 13 minutes, finishing with just three second half turnovers after having 10 at halftime.

Collis Temple, with 22 points, and Ronald Dupree, with 23, each had career scoring nights for the 4-0 Tigers while Torris Bright had 13 points and eight assists, with Brian Beshara getting 12 points.

Ron Everhart’s Cowboys are 2-2 on the season, having lost to Mississippi State (83-74) and Louisiana Lafayette (88-81) before defeating Louisiana Tech (76-61) and Loyola (108-48). The Loyola game was back on Dec. 2 and was the team’s last game as the Cowboys set a school record for scoring margin.

Five players scored in double figures with Fred Gentry getting 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Paul Beik had 18 and Demond Mallet 17.

The Tigers lead the overall series, 9-0, with the last game coming in 1998 with LSU winning, 56-39.

This is the middle game of a three-game homestand for the Tigers, who will play at home Saturday at 7 p.m. against the University of New Orleans. Shaquille O’Neal will be on hand and his jersey will be retired at halftime of the contest.
