BATON ROUGE — LSU has accepted a bid to face 15th-ranked Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at 4 p.m. CT on December 29 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to play in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and to face a quality team like Georgia Tech,” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “We felt all along the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is an outstanding bowl with great attendance and great television exposure. This will be a great experience for both our players and fans. With the type of season we’ve had, our players deserve to go to a bowl of this caliber.”
The Tigers finished the year with a 7-4 overall mark, which included a 5-3 record in SEC action. The Tigers had overtime wins over nationally-ranked Tennssee (38-31) and Mississippi State (45-38) as well as a victory over Alabama (30-28) and at Ole Miss (20-9).
Georgia Tech has won seven straight enters the contest with 9-2 overall mark. The game will be the first between LSU and Georgia Tech since 1963 when the Tigers posted a 7-6 win in Baton Rouge. Georgia Tech leads the overall series with LSU, 12-5.
LSU will be playing in a bowl game for the first time since 1997 when LSU beat Notre Dame, 27-9, in the Independence Bowl.
LSU will be making its 32nd overall bowl appearance (14-16-1), including its third in the Peach Bowl. LSU beat Clemson, 10-7, in the 1996 Peach Bowl and the Tigers posted a 31-27 victory over Florida State in the 1968 Peach Bowl.
“We’re very excited to have LSU back in Atlanta,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl president. “Selecting LSU gives us the number two ACC team against a Tigers team that has gone from 3-8 last year to 7-4 this year and a second-place finish in the SEC West.”
Recognized as the nation’s most competitive bowl game, the last 15 games have resulted in an average margin of victory of only 3.7 points. The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will be nationally televised by ESPN.
