BATON ROUGE — The LSU volleyball team avenged an earlier loss to in-state rival Tulane on Tuesday night with a 15-11, 15-11, 15-10 victory over the Green Wave.
The win improves LSU to 12-13 on the season while the Tulane falls to 15-13.
“This is a good win for us,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “Anytime we play Tulane it is an emotional match, so for us to be able to come out and play as hard and get a win in three is great.”
The Tigers used stellar defense to score the win as they blocked back 11 balls, led by Lauren Cuyler’s six, and recorded 67 digs in just three games. Jennifer Hampton led the way in digs with a career-high tying 25, which ranks second in school history for digs in a three-game match.
“We dug a ton of balls tonight and when you do that it shows that you are playing hard,” Flory said. “The defense played extremely well tonight to shut down a good Tulane team.”
Offensively, Meghan Bedford provided the spark as she hit for a match-high 19 kills en route to a .405 attack percentage. She added 11 digs to record her fifth double-double of the year.
All-Southeastern Conference middle blocker Meagan Davis continued to play well as she hit for 10 kills, her fourth match with double-digit kills in the past five, and a .348 attack percentage. Davis was also a force at the net with five blocks.
Kim Sentmore, an All-Conference USA player, led Tulane with an all around performance as she had a team-high 16 kills and a match-high 26 digs to go along with two blocks and an ace.
The match will be televised by tape delay on Channel Eleven in Baton Rouge on Thursday at 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The Tigers will travel to Arkansas this Friday for a 7 p.m. match with the LadyBacks before hosting them on Sunday at 2 p.m. A win in either match would clinch a spot in the SEC Tournament for LSU.
