BATON ROUGE — LSU forward Kara Dean has been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer Player of the Year in voting done by a panel of sports information directors across the state.
The sophomore from Spring, Texas, led LSU with 15 goals and 32 points. Dean scored a team-high six game-winning goals, including the game winners against Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulane.
The Tigers were also represented by sophomore defender Ashley Mitnick, who scored seven goals and added a team-high eight assists on the season. Mitnick, a second-team All-SEC selection for the second consecutive
season, moved to third all-time in LSU history in goals scored with 12.
Senior forward and track All-American Somalia Lindsey was named Honorable Mention All-State, as well.
Southland Conference Player-of-the-Year Britiany Cargill of Northwestern State was selected to the team after scoring a conference-record 16 goals and 37 points. Joining Cargill on the team was freshman Hillarie Marshall who scored 10 goals and 22 points on the season.
The Demons, the 2000 Southland Conference regular-season and tournament champion, took home two individual awards as head coach Jimmy Mitchell was named Coach-of-the-Year and junior college transfer Shannon Tenney earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Mitchell guided Northwestern State to a school-record 15 wins, including a nine-game winning streak, and its first-ever berth in the NCAA Play-In. Tenney was a second-team All-Southland Conference pick and posted five goals and four assists.
Tulane placed three players on the team, led by sophomore midfielder Colleen Lake, the 1999 LSWA Player-of-the-Year. Joining Lake on the team were sophomore Megan Stack, the Green Wave’s leading scorer with 21 points, and freshman Tiffany Lawson, who scored five goals and tied a school-record with seven assists.
Cory Cochrane of Southeastern Louisiana was named the Freshman-of-the-Year after scoring a team-high 11 goals and leading the Lady Lions to a school-record 13 wins. Cochrane, the Southland Conference Player-of-the-Year, was joined on the team by junior midfielder Becca Weingartner, a three-time All-Louisiana selection.
Centenary’s Lara Brown was selected to the team after setting school records for goals scored (23), total points (54) and game-winning goals (7). Brown also led the Ladies with eight assists and currently leads
the nation 3.00 points and 1.28 goals per game.
Anne Corbello of Louisiana-Lafayette was selected as the All-Louisiana goalkeeper after tallying 144 saves in tha Cajuns’ inaugural season. Corbello had six matches with 10 or more saves, including a career-high 17 against the University of Houston.
