ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — LSU women’s basketball coach Sue Gunter announced on Thursday that three more high school players have signed national letters of intent to join the Lady Tigers for the 2001-2002 basketball season.
LSU is in town for the Women’s Sports Foundation Tournament which begins on Friday night at 9:15 when the Lady Tigers take on New Mexico.
The three signees are Scholanda Dorrell and Florence Williams of Miami (Fla.) Edison High School and Tillie Willis of Cumberland Christian High School outside Atlanta, Ga.
The 5-10 Dorrell, who was listed in Thursday’s USA Today as one of the top girls available in the country, is listed as the number 9 guard available according to the All Star Girls Report. The Street and Smith All-American chose LSU over Georgia, Florida and Auburn. Last season as a junior, she averaged 20 points a game with nine rebounds, four steals and four assists.
“She is a very gifted athlete,” said LSU Coach Sue Gunter. She has speed, quickness and has a two guard is a very good ball handler.”
Her 6-1 teammate, Williams, was rated the number 7 forward in the All-Star Girls report after earning two All-State honors and a Nike All-American citation. After averaging 17 points, 8 rebounds and two blocks a game she chose LSU over Georgia, Florida, Auburn and Old Dominion.
“She’s a lefty,” Gunter said. “She is also a gifted athlete. She’s like a 6-1 Roneeka Hodges. She is highly recruited and we are very fortunate.”
Willis stands 6-3 and is ranked 17th by the ASGR of post players, choosing LSU over Florida, Georgia and Alabama-Birmingham. The three-time All-Star player averaged 16 points per game and 10 boards with 3 blocks and 2 assists.
“Willis is a talented, good athlete and an outstanding student,” said Gunter. “She will be a very good addition for our team.”
The three join Aiysha Smith of Tyler Junior College who signed her letter of intent on Wednesday to give the Lady Tigers four signees in the early period which continues to run through next week.
