HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The 10th-ranked LSU women’s golf team found bright spots in the play of senior Katy Harris and junior Meredith Duncan, but couldn’t finish higher than a tie for 11th in the final round of the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes event here Sunday.
Harris, from South Bend, Ind., made it two consecutive top 10 finishes with a final round 1-under 71 to finish at even par 216. Harris posted rounds of 75-70-71 to finish five shots out of the title won by Lorena Ochoa of Arizona in a playoff with Katherine Hull at 5-under par 211. Harris now has 13 career top 10 finishes, seventh best all time in the history of LSU.
Duncan, from Shreveport, just missed a top 10, firing a 4-over 76 to finish at 3-over 219 (72-71-76). Duncan finished in a group tied for 13th place.
As a team LSU shot an 18-over 306 on the final day to finish at 42-over par 906, tied for 11th with Purdue. Auburn won the event with a 9-over par total of 873, shooting three consecutive rounds of 291 to win the title by five shots over Duke.
On the final day, LSU also counted scores of 77 from freshman Devon Day and an 82 from junior Lindy Hitdlebaugh.
LSU closes out the fall portion of its season next week at the College Golf Foundation National Match Play Championships.
