Women’s Golf 11th at Palmetto Dunes Through Two

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The LSU Tigers women’s golf team improved its score 14 strokes from round one Saturday in the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational, but could only move up one spot from 12th to 11th in the team standings.

But Shreveport junior Meredith Duncan continues to shine with the possibility of a top five finish after firing a 1-under par 71 in the second round to go with Friday’s even par effort. Duncan’s 143 total is in a group tied for sixth. The individual leader is Young-A Yang of Tennessee who is at 7-under 137 after rounds of 69 and 68.

South Bend, Ind., senior Katy Harris also is in position for a top 10 finish after firing a 2-under 70 in the second round. Her two-day total is 1-over 145, good enough for a tie for 11th place.

LSU is 24 over 600 for the two rounds as the 293 total ties for the 10th best total in a single round in school history.

Auburn and Duke are tied for the lead at 6-over 582, one shot better than both Southern California and Texas, tied at 7-over. Tennessee is fifth at 11-over.

LSU also counted on the afternoon a 75 from Gretna junior Lindy Hitdlebaugh and a 77 from Greer, South Carolina, freshman Devon Day.

“This was a much better effort by the team today,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “While sure we didn’t gain much in the team competition, it was important for this team to post a good solid low number on the second day after some struggles on Friday. Five over is a very good number for this team.”

The final round of the tournament is set for Sunday.
