BATON ROUGE—The LSU men’s golf team shot a final round 2-under par 286 on Tuesday and a tournament record total of 856 to win the eighth annual Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate title.

The win was the first for the Tigers at the CCLA since 1993, the inagural year of the tournament.

Senior Alan Morgan won medalist honors as the top individual. Morgan’s back-to-back 67’s on Monday for a total of 134 was a 36-hole record. He shot a final round even-par 72 for a tournament total of 206 and finished at 10-under par. He edged out Arkansas’s Craig Lile, who was 9-under. Lile also shot a 67 in the first round and followed that score with a 69 and a 71.

The Tigers rallied from third place and four strokes behind after Monday’s play to claim their second tournament title of the fall season. The Tigers also won the Tennessee Tournament of Champions in September. Morgan was also the medalist there.

“Alan is just a wonderful person, he’s a fighter and he loves LSU”, said head coach Greg Jones. “What can I say about him that hasn’t already been said. He loves his teammates, and he has basically said hop on my back and let’s go.”

Morgan finished his final round with one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars to finish with a 72.

“I am just trying to get the best score I can do try to help out the team”, said Morgan. “It takes five guys to win a tournament and we had two guys shoot 69’s which is unbelievable considering the pin placements out here.”

The two scores of 69 in the third round were shot by sophomore John Humphries and junior transfer Nathan Goulding, making his first career appearance for the Tigers. Humphries finished in fourth place and Goulding finished in a tie for 10th with Jamie Elson of Augusta State.

The University of Tulsa, the leader after 36 holes Monday, finished second behind LSU. Alabama-Birmingham placed third at 5-under. Vanderbilt finished fourth at 8-over par and rounding out the top five was the College of Charleston at 12-over par.

The Tigers outdueled an extremely talented field Tuesday to overcome the four-stroke deficit from a day earlier.

“We met some goals this fall and exceeded some goals, but we are still working on consistency,” Jones said. “It will be a nice break for us and a great way to go into the spring with some momentum.”

The Tigers will have a lengthy break before returning to action Feb. 10 at the 2001 Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The Tigers will host their second tournament of the season in March, the first annual LSU Spring Invitational held at the University Club.
