Tigers Fire Tournament Record To Move Into Third at CCLA

Tuesday’s final round was delayed one hour due to fog. The final pairings teed off at 10:52 a.m. CST. Results from the final round will be available around 5 p.m.

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Alan Morgan became the first golfer in the eight year history of the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate to break double figures under par for the first two rounds of the tournament as the Tigers fought back from a shaky opening round to put itself into contention going into Tuesday’s final round.

Morgan shot back-to-back 5-under par 67s to stand alone at the top of the individual leader board at 10-under par 134. That breaks the tournament’s 36-hole record set one year ago when Michael Sims completed the first day at 9-under par 135.

The first 36 holes of the tournament were delayed 90 minutes by a fog delay before play was finally able to commence and finished as darkness descended upon the CCLA layout.

The Tigers found themselves 13 shots out of the lead after 18 holes as Alabama-Birmingham, the sixth ranked team on the Sagarin ratings, posted a blazing 8-under par 280. But LSU would get an impressive team performance in the second round, shooting a tournament record tying single round of 11-under par, 277, picking up 10 shots on UAB and six shots on Tulsa, the tournament leader after one day and 36 holes of the 54-hole event.

Tulsa shot consistent rounds of 5-under 283 and stands at 10-under 566, one shot ahead of UAB at 9-under 567. The Tigers 293-277 — 570 total is 6-under in third, four shots better than fourth-place Augusta State (290-284) at 574, 2-under par. The top five teams are under par as Vanderbilt came in at 1-under 575.

In the history of the tournament, only one team, East Tennessee State in 1998 has finished the tournament’s 54 holes under par at 2-under, a mark which appears in serious trouble if the wind remains down again on Tuesday as the course played dry and short as the average score for the day was 74.61. Tournament leader Tulsa played the par 5s at 14-under par to lead the tournament and was the best on the par 4s at 10 over par. LSU as a team made a tournament best 41 birdies and Tulsa has a tournament best 121 pars.

But the story of the LSU round was the consistent play of Morgan.

“Alan was superb,” said LSU Coach Greg Jones. “He had probably the best one day of golf by any player I have ever witnessed as a coach. We finished the morning sloppy, but this lineup is good enough to shoot in the 60s and we rallied in the afternoon. Alan has maintained a level of excellence all fall. He has jumped another level from last fall.”

In the 11-under par afternoon round, the Tigers added to Morgan’s 67, 3-under 69s from both John Humphries and Nathan Goulding and an even-par 72 from Craig Taylor. Humphries is tied for seventh in the individual competition at 3-under 141.

In all, an amazing 17 golfers are even par or better after 36 holes with Morgan holding a two-shot lead over Arkansas’ Craig Lile at 8-under 136 (67-69). Jedd McLuen, last year’s runner-up, from Charleston and Graeme McDowell, who opened with a tournament record tying 66 in the opening round, from Alabama-Birmingham are tied for third at 6-under 138.

The final round will begin with tee times at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th tees, although the possibility of another fog delay exists. LSU, Tulsa and UAB will go off the first tee in the final wave beginning at 9:20 a.m. as LSU looks to win the CCLA event for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1993.
