Soccer To Face Kentucky in SEC Tournament

BATON ROUGE — For the first time in two seasons, the LSU women’s soccer team will take part in the eight-team Southeastern Conference Tournament in Athens, Ga., from Nov. 2-5. LSU, the fifth seed, will take on fourth-seeded Kentucky in the first round on Thursday.

In head coach George Fotopoulos‘ first season at LSU, the Tigers finished a remarkable 15-5 record, a 10 1/2 game improvement from 1999’s 4-15-1 finish.

With Georgia falling to Tennessee on Friday, LSU moved ahead of the Bulldogs and into the No. 5 slot. Georgia fell behind Vanderbilt to the No. 7 position after LSU won the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Commodores, 1-0.

Just 13 days after squaring off in Lexington, the Tigers (15-5, 5-4) and Wildcats (14-4, 6-3 SEC) will meet again in the first round of the SEC Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2. Should the Tigers win, they will face the winner of top-seeded Florida and No. 8 seed Arkansas on Friday at 3 p.m.

On Oct. 20, the Tigers lost to Kentucky, 3-1, after the Wildcats scored two second-half goals including one in the last second which was protested unsuccessfully.

LSU came back to score two goals in 2:17 to beat Tulane on Wednesday night, 2-1, and finish the regular season.
