Soccer Hangs With Kentucky, Falls 3-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The LSU soccer team kept the score close at 1-1 until just after halftime, but dropped a close match to the Kentucky Wildcats, 3-1, on Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington.

Kentucky scored its third goal in the closing second of the match, a goal which may be protested to the NCAA once the video tape is reviewed.

The Tigers move to 13-5 for the season and 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference. ? Kentucky improves to 12-4 for the season and 5-3 in the SEC.

“This was a solid win for Kentucky,” said head coach George Fotopoulos. “This is a team that was 10th in the country two weeks ago and we come in and keep the score at 1-1 for most of the game.? Then Kentucky goes up 2-1.? For us it is a good inspirational victory that we were able to come in here and battle.? This was a tough environment to play in and I don’t take anything away from Kentucky.? They are a good team and will most likely be in the NCAA tournament, and for us to come in and play as well as we did was a good quality victory for us.”

The Wildcats started the scoring in the 24th minute of the game with a goal by Keri Boyce assisted by Aimee Brown.?

Somalia Lindsay tied the score for the Tigers when she went one-on-one with the goalie and put one in the lower left corner in the 36th minute of the match.? She was assisted by Melissa Shelton.? Lindsay now has three goals for the season, and Shelton has four assists.

Kentucky’s Jen Reese scored the second Wildcat goal to break the tie with a shot from the top of the box in the 56th minute of play.?

Tiger Bonnie Otillio was in goal for LSU and had five saves for the evening.? Wildcat goalie Beth Wells had two saves.? Kentucky outshot the Tigers 19-6.?

The Tigers travel to Nashville next for a Sunday match against the Vanderbilt Commodores at noon.? LSU returns home for its last home match of the season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Tulane.? The Tigers will honor their five seniors in their last home game.
