BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU outside hitter Meghan Bedford has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for her efforts this past weekend in the Tigers’ two wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
“Meghan is more than worthy of the award. She played through a great deal of adversity, with the flu bug, to win the award,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “It goes to show that if you are mentally tough and come to play, good things will happen. I am very proud of her.”
The junior from League City, Texas, recorded 23 kills, one shy of a career-high, and set a new career high with 13 digs against Mississippi State in recording her third double-double in the past five matches. The 23 kills ranks second in LSU history for kills in a three-game match.
Against Ole Miss, she was not slated to play due to flu symptoms that hit over the weekend. She sat out game one, which LSU lost 15-4, before entering the match in game two to spark the Tigers to victory with 13 kills and three blocks. She hit for eight of the 13 kills in game four on just 10 attempts to put away the Rebels.
Bedford is the first LSU player to win the honor since Carmis Franks did so in the final week of the 1996 season.
