Faulk Named LSWA Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke McCown couldn’t be stopped this past Saturday while LSU linebacker Trev Faulk was busy stopping the opposition and both earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors for their efforts.

McCown earned the offensive honor in Tech’s 48-14 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, while Faulk earned the defensive honor in the Tigers 34-0 shutout over Kentucky.

The players were nominated by the sports information directors of football playing universities and voted on by a panel of media from throughout the state.

McCown, a freshman from Jacksonville, Texas., completed 31-of-42 passes for 353 yards and six touchdowns in the win over ULL. The six touchdowns tied Tim Rattay and Jason Martin for fourth place in the Tech record book. All the numbers for McCown were season highs for the signal caller.

Faulk, against the Wildcats, registered 13 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery and 1 pass broken up. The sophomore linebacker led an LSU defense that shut out Kentucky for the first time in the Hal Mumme era. The 13 tackles marked Faulk’s fourth double-digit tackle game of the season. His fumble recovery came on the opening possession of the second half and LSU scored six plays later for a 17-0 lead.

Others nominated on offense were: LSU quarterback Josh Booty, McNeese tailback Marcus Trahan, Northwestern State tailback Tony Taylor and Tulane offensive tackle Bernard Robertson.

The other defensive nominees were McNeese strong safety Joe Judge, Northwestern safety Judith Sylvester and Tulane linebacker Jerry Phillips.
