BATON ROUGE — Jennifer Hampton recorded her team-high sixth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 21 digs in only three games to lead the LSU volleyball team to a 15-8, 15-7, 15-10 victory over Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky.
The win improves LSU to 7-7 overall, including a 2-2 conference mark. The Wildcats fell to 4-11 on the year with an identical 2-2 league mark.
“I think any conferece win is a big win for us,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “We weren?t very efficient, but we fought really hard and answered when we they put pressure on us.”
The key to the Tigers win was tough serving that produced 10 aces in just three games of action. Katie Kubena and Meghan Bedford each recorded four to lead the team.
“Our serving was really tough and Kentucky had a really hard time controlling the ball. That is the type of thing we have to do to take the next step up,” said Flory.
LSU hit only .193 on the match, but was able to hold the Wildcats to just a .153 clip with solid team defense and blocking.
“I am happy with where we were. We got in a good flow defensively and our blocking has gotten better.”
Hampton?s performance which notched match highs in kills and digs and included two aces and a block as well.
“Hampton has taked her level up. Her offense is keeping us in matches and winnign games for us. If she can maintain that then she will become a big go-to player.”
The Tigers will face Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a crucial inter-division match up.
