ATHENS, Ga. — Freshman Bryan Fisher won his singles flight of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships this weekend while Dan Kiernan and Sebastian Rutka teamed up to take the doubles crown in their flight.
Fisher, who went 6-0 on the weekend while dropping only three sets to claim the Division III Singles crown, defeated South Alabama’s Evan Fowler in the final, 6-5, 3-6, 6-4, Sunday afternoon.
Earlier in the day Fisher had beaten Chuck Haddox of Samford 6-5 (1), 1-6, 6-4 to earn the berth in the final round.
Rutka, who competed in the Division II singles, reached Sunday’s final before falling to Michael Staniak of Middle Tennessee State 6-3, 6-5 (2). He had knocked off Florida State’s Alex Herrera, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the semifinal earlier that day.
In doubles action, it was an all-LSU final as Tiger teams dominated the Division I flight of the tournament. In the final round, the nation’s 26th-ranked duo of Kiernan and Rutka teamed to beat Jesse Smatt and Ajay Ramaswami, who are the 41st-ranked team in the country.
The Tiger tennis team will be in action again this weekend as will be competing in the second annual WingspanBank.com/World Team Tennis Intercollegiate Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
