OXFORD, Miss. — With an Ole Miss goal in the 79th minute, the LSU soccer team’s six-game winning streak was snapped by? the Ole Miss Rebels, 2-1, Friday night in Oxford, Miss.
The Tigers fall to 9-2 for the season and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference.? The Rebels are now 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.?
“What can I say.? We almost beat the division champs,” said head coach George? Fotopoulos. “We had eight freshmen and three sophomores in with three starters out.? We had chances to win the game.? I am so very proud of this team. ? I think Ole Miss thought they could back down and not play any more after their goal.? I look at this game as a win today.? It was a great effort by our team.”
Sophomore Courtney Biddle scored the first goal of the game for Ole Miss in the fourth minute of play on a shot from seven yards out with an assist from Jennifer Soileau.
LSU tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute with an unassisted goal from sophomore Melissa Shelton on a break-away past the goalie Melissa Smith.? The goal was Shelton’s third of the season.
The Rebels regained the lead with a goal in the 79th mintute by freshman Amy Sample.
Tiger goalie Bonnie Otillio had 10 saves in her 90 minutes of play.? Smith had two saves for Ole Miss.? The Tigers were outshot by the Rebels 22-6.
LSU will face the Bulldogs of Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville at 1 p.m. in the third SEC match of the season before returning home to take on Georgia on Friday and Tennessee on Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.?
