LAFAYETTE, La. — Sandwiched between two crucial weekends of Southeastern Conference play, the LSU soccer team’s victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-0, increased the team’s winning streak to six games on Tuesday night at Carencro’s Moore Field.
“We rested a few starters and had a few injuries coming into tonight, so we really relied heavily on our reserves to perform throughout the game,” head coach George Fotopoulos said. “I was very pleased with the way they played after coming off a tough weekend.”
LSU (9-1, 1-0 SEC), in the midst of its second-longest winning streak in the program’s six seasons, travels to Oxford and Starkville, Miss., on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., respectively, for a key SEC Western Division road trip.
Sophomore Kara Dean hit a left footer blast from 25 yards out to score first for the Tigers 30 minutes in to the game.? The goal was her ninth of the season tying her with Jessica Powers and Kristen Hogan for third in most goals scored in a season.?
The Tigers’ second goal was a converted penalty kick by sophomore Ashley Mitnick for her fourth goal of the season in the 44th minute of play.?
Five minutes into the second half, freshman Rachel Cohen netted a shot into an empty net for her fifth goal of the season and the Tigers third of the game.?
Sophomore Melissa Shelton hit a shot into an empty net to score the fourth goal of the match off a cross from Dean.? The goal was Shelton’s second of the season.?
Goalkeepers Bonnie Otillio and Bryan Warnock combined for the Tigers’ sixth shutout of the young season and their third straight.
First-year soccer program UL-Lafayette fell to 2-7 on the season.
