PIKESVILLE, Md. — Ajay Ramaswami will represent the LSU men’s tennis team this week in the the opening leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Grand Slam, the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships, which begins Thursday at The Suburban Club of Baltimore County.
Ramaswami, who is ranked 57th in the nation, is one of 64 singles players in the main draw. He will play Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday. The second round of men’s singles is scheduled to follow the first.
Only one LSU player has ever reached as far as the semifinal of the Grand Slam event, that coming in 1988 when Johan Kjellsten won the Clay Court tournament, becoming the first Tiger to ever win a collegiate Grand Slam tournament.
Brian Vahaly of Virginia is the top seed for the tournament and is ranked No. 3 in the nation. Joining him from the Top 25 are: Mississippi State’s No. 4 Marco Baron, Virginia Commonwealth’s No. 8 Frank Moser, Arkansas’ No. 9 Oskar Johansson, Mississippi’s No. 10 Alexander Hartman, Tennessee’s No. 11 Mark Parsons, Duke’s No. 13 Ramsey Smith and No. 16 Andres Pedroso, Purdue’s No. 17 Jason Marshall. Clemson’s No. 18 Josh Goffi, Mississippi’s No. 19 James Shortall and Tennessee’s No. 20 Adam Carey.
