Soccer Picks Up Fifth Win, 2-0, Over Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The LSU soccer team followed the lead of freshmen Elizabeth Marschall and Rachel Cohen to a 2-0 shutout over Embry-Riddle on a soggy Saturday evening in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“We didn’t play very well as a team, and the rain didn’t help much,” said head coach George Fotopoulos.? “Our offense just was not on.? I am pleased, however, that we found a way to win.? That was very important for our young team’s development.”

The Tigers are now 5-1 to add to their best start in school history.? Embry-Riddle moves to 1-1 for the season.? The shutout was LSU’s third of the year.? The Tigers began the season with a shutout over Troy State and also had one over Stetson University.

Marschall, a Baton Rouge native, netted her second goal of the season late in the 80th minute of play to break the scoreless tie and help propel the Tigers to victory.

The Tigers struck again immediately with a second goal from Cohen with an assist from Katie Calvin in the 81st minute.? Cohen is second on the team in goals scored with three for the season.

LSU outshot the Eagles 25-2 for the evening.? Eagle goalie Heather Balin had 13 saves for her 90 minutes of play.? Bonnie Otillio was in goal for the Tigers the entire 90 minutes for her first complete shutout of the season.

The Tigers will return home to the LSU Soccer Complex for a match against Alabama A&M on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:00 p.m.
