Fontenot Named Summer First Team All-American

LOS ANGELES — After being named the Most Valuable Player of the Cape Cod League on Aug. 8, LSU second baseman Mike Fontenot was named a Baseball America First Team Summer All-American, the publication announced on Wednesday.

Fontenot, who will be a sophomore in the 2001 season, led the Wareham Gatemen in batting average and stolen bases while finishing fourth and second in the league, respectively. He also finished fifth in the league in on-base percentage.

Wareham reached the League’s Western Division playoff before being eliminated by the Hyannis Mets in a three-game series. Hyannis then lost consecutive games to the Brewster Whitecaps, which went home with the 2000 Arnold Mycock Cape League Championship Trophy.

Primarily the team’s No. 2 hitter, Fontenot finished the regular season batting .322 (39-of-121) with 22 runs, 14 RBI, one double, two triples, one homer and 25-of-33 stolen bases while committing only four errors.

The second baseman played in only 34 of Wareham’s 43 games due to the College World Series Championship.
