Women’s Golf Ranked 10th Preseason

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s golf team, which left late Wednesday for its first tournament of the 2000 fall season, has been voted 10th in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.

The Lady Tigers are trying to advance to the NCAA Division I Golf Championships for the fourth consecutive year. LSU has finished 10th in each of the last two championships and finished sixth in the poll a season ago.

Arizona, the defending national champions, is the preseason No. 1 selection, followed by Stanford, Duke, Southern California, Auburn, Tulsa, Texas, San Jose State, Georgia and LSU rounding out the top 10.

Other SEC schools in the top 25 are Tennessee at No. 12 and Florida at 22.

Meredith Duncan, the LSU junior from Shreveport, is 11th in the country in the preseason individual rankings of the Collegiate Golf Foundation. Duncan finished seventh in the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships a year ago, earning honorable mention all-America status. This summer she advanced to the round of 16 in the United States Amateur and won the Western Amateur.

Three SEC golfers are ranked in front of Duncan: Danielle Downey of Auburn, sixth; Young-A Yang of Tennessee, eighth; and, Celeste Troche of Auburn, 10th.
