BATON ROUGE — The LSU volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a 7 p.m. match with Southern Miss.
The Tigers stand at 1-1 on the year and are fresh of a 15-4, 15-9, 15-7 win over Central Florida in the consolation match of the Colorado PowerBar Invitational in Boulder, Colo. In the victory, LSU hit an astounding .417 for the match, the best for any Tiger team since hitting .451 against Mississippi State in 1996.
Southern Miss is riding a two-match win streak with wins over Florida Atlantic and Charleston Southern. The Golden Eagles are 2-2 on the young season after competing in the Florida State Tournament this past weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
Leading LSU into the match is middle blocker Meagan Davis who has hit for double-digit kills in both matches this season, including a season-high 16 against Central Florida on Sunday. She is also second on the team in blocking, behind middle blocker Rachel Vogt, with seven total blocks, including a team-high three solo.
Southern Miss is led by middle blocker Kelly Tribble and outside hitter Lindsay Westendorf. Tribble leads the Golden Eagles with 3.14 kills/game and 0.64 blocks/game averages. Westendorf averages right at 3 kills/game and leads the team defensively with a 2.79 digs/game average.
This is the second straight year the two teams have squared off and sixth overall. LSU escaped with a five-game victory last season and has won all five previous meetings with Southern Miss.
