BATON ROUGE- Four former LSU track and field athletes will begin their individual quests for a spot on the American squad at the Sydney Olympics Friday evening at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.
Russ Buller and Derrick Brew, who concluded their LSU careers last month by helping the Tigers to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships open their bids, as well as former Lady Tigers Cheryl Taplin and Yolanda Warren.
Buller, the 2000 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor pole vault champion, opens up at 9:45 p.m. (CT) Friday night with qualifying rounds. The final will be held on Sunday. Buller finished seventh at last year’s World Championship Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Brew, the 2000 SEC Outdoor Commissioner’s Trophy winner, will make his case for a spot in the 400-meter dash, with preliminary rounds set to begin at 10 p.m. Brew finished fourth at the World Championship Trials a year ago and earned a spot on the U.S. 4×400-meter relay team at the World Championships in Seville, Spain.
Taplin, a 16-time All-American from 1991-94 while at LSU, will try to earn a spot on the U.S. squad in the 100-meter dash. Taplin was a 1997 and 1999 World Championship qualifier in the 200-meter dash and ran the opening leg on the American 4×100-meter team in Seville last summer.
Warren, the 1995 NCAA Indoor 400-meter champion, recently returned to the sport after taking several years off and will try to make her first Olympic team in the quarter. Warren will run in the 400-meter dash prelims at 9:30 p.m. Friday evening.
In all 14 current or former LSU athletes will be on hand in Sacramento. The trials run from Friday through July 23.
