Swift Taken 2nd, Smith 45th in NBA Draft

MINNEAPOLIS — As expected, LSU forward Stromile Swift had to wait through only one pick before being selected second overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies at the 2000 NBA draft Wednesday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Jabari Smith was selected at the 45th pick overall by the Sacramento Kings in the second round.

Swift, a 6-9 product of Shreveport and Fair Park High School, announced that he would forego his final two seasons of eligibility at LSU just one week ago in Baton Rouge after entering his name into the draft without securing an agent on May 11.

He became the 11th first-round draft pick in the school’s history, joining Tiger and NBA greats Bob Pettit, Pete Maravich, Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) and Shaquille O’Neal as top three picks overall. He also became the first Tiger selected in the NBA draft since Randy Livingston and Ronnie Henderson were chosen 42nd and 55th overall in the 1996 draft.

Unless it trades for another, Vancouver will only have one pick (Swift) in the 2000 NBA draft.

Both Swift and Smith led LSU to the NCAA Sweet 16 with victories over Southeast Missouri State and Texas before falling to Wisconsin to end the season with a 28-6 record. LSU won the Southeastern Conference Western Division and tied for the SEC regular season title with with Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee at 12-4.

Among several postseason honors Swift received, the SEC Co-Player of the Year was named Second Team All-America by Basketball Times and Third Team All-America by the Associated Press. He was also named First-Team All-SEC by the AP and the coaches.
