PORTLAND, Ore. — Just one week ago, Brad Hawpe was in Omaha, Neb., helping the LSU baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Stanford Cardinal. Hawpe made his professional debut Friday evening at Civic Stadium in Portland, Ore., and was just short of phenomenal as the Portland Rockies beat the Boise Hawks 7-3.
Hawpe singled in the first, homered to right field in the fifth and doubled off the wall in right in the seventh. He was 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Northwest League’s South Division-leading Rockies (3-1) won its third in a row.
The Portland Rockies are one of three single-A minor league affiliates of the Colorado Rockies.
Hawpe, an 11th-round pick in the draft of the Rockies, wasted no time signing with the team after the helping the Tigers to its fifth title in 10 years.
