Chmela, Kiernan Fall in NCAA Doubles Tournament

ATHENS, Ga. LSU’s ninth-ranked doubles team of Michal Chmela and Dan Kiernan was upset in the second round of the NCAA men’s tennis doubles championships on Friday afternoon at the University of Georgia.

Chmela, whose LSU career is now over, and Kiernan were beaten by Mississippi State’s duo of Marco Baron and Charles Sevigny for the second time this season, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. On March 8, the Bulldog pair became the first team to beat LSU’s top team in a doubles dual match in two seasons.

“I am proud of Michal and Dan for the outstanding season they have had,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “They were crucial to our success all season long, so it is tough to see their season have to come to an end.”

With the doubles all-America honors Chmela and Kiernan earned by being seeded in the NCAA Tournament, Chmela will graduate as the first four-time all-American in Tiger history. He was a singles all-America in 1998 and 1999 as well being doubles all-America in 1998 and 2000.

The all-America honor for Kiernan is the first of his career.
