Colosio and Mores Advance at NCAA Championships

MALIBU, Calif. — LSU’s third-ranked doubles team comprised of sophomore Bruna Colosio and senior Ana Paula Mores advanced to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships Monday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Iowa’s 14th-ranked Neykova and Wiegler.

“They (Colosio and Mores) both came out today and played with a lot of fight and determination,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “That is what I like to see from them in these big-time matches.”

Iowa and LSU’s No. 1 doubles teams were familiar foes during Monday’s late-afternoon match. The Lady Tigers’ Colosio/Mores upended Neykova/Wiegler last week in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championships, 8-6, to clinch a 5-3 LSU win.

Mores and Colosio, who are the fourth-seeded doubles team in the tournament, will face Georgia’s second-ranked Marissa Catlin and Lori Grey who dedeated Virginia Commonwealth’s Nedelkova-Ondresova, 6-2, 7-5. Colosio/Mores’ next match will begin Tuesday at 4 p.m. (Central Time) here in Malibu, Calif.

In the NCAA Singles Championship, LSU’s 11th-ranked Colosio moved into the second round of the tournament by defeating Alena Jecminkovi of Kansas State. After losing the first set, 6-2, Colosio swept the final two sets with 6-2 scores of her own.

Colosio improved both her overall record to 36-8 this season and her record in open events to 14-5. She will face William and Mary’s 52nd-ranked Delphine Troch Tuesday at 11 a.m. (CDT) in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship. Troch advanced to the second round be defeating Kavitha Krishnamurthy of Princeton, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

“Bruna has been playing some awesome tennis lately,” said Minnis. “And I think that she has a very good chance to go far in this tournament. Many of the top seeds have already been upset today, and that should make Bruna’s path easier.”

The opening round of the singles tournament marked losses for 6 of the top 16 seeded players in the nation, including Texas’ second-seeded Janet Walker and Wake Forest’s third-seeded Adria Engel.

Other top players that were upset in the first-round were Kristina Kraszewski (Washington), Megan Miller (Duke), Sarah Walker (UCLA), and Amy Jensen (California).
