MALIBU, Calif. — The 32nd-ranked ranked LSU women’s tennis team came back from a 2-0 deficit to knock NCAA National Championship host and seventh-ranked Pepperdine out of the tournament, 5-4, on the Waves’ home courts Saturday night in Malibu, Calif. LSU advances to the NCAA Round of 16 which begins next weekend in Malibu.
Tied 3-3 after Bruna Colosio defeated 31st-ranked Ipek Senogul, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (4), to complete singles play, LSU took two of three doubles matches from the Waves including a victory at No. 1 doubles by the nation’s third-ranked team of Colosio and Ana Paula Mores over seventh-ranked Paola Palencia and Senogul, 8-3.
Colosio’s singles match lasted 3:15.
The victory was head coach Tony Minnis’ first over a team ranked higher than 10th in the nation during his nine seasons in Baton Rouge.
LSU’s No. 2 doubles team of Amy McIlhaney and Fernanda Tsucamoto earned LSU’s fourth point of the match with an 8-4 victory over Pepperdine’s Monika Horvath and Maren Mueller.
