Mores, Calongne Given Regional Tennis Awards

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis assistant coach Sally Calogne and Ana Paula Mores, the Lady Tigers’ lone senior, both won regional awards Thursday afternoon for their hard work and dedication during the 1999-2000 season.

Calogne was honored with the Southwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year Award, and Mores won the Senior Player of the Year Award.

“It is a great honor for both Sally and Ana to win these awards,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Sally has been very instrumental in all of our success these past four years, and it is an honor for her to be recognized by her peers.”

Calogne joined the Lady Tiger staff in 1997 and since her arrival LSU has accumulated an impressive 60-40 record. She has guided the Lady Tigers to their sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season and a 14-10 overall record.

Mores, who is tied for eighth-place on LSU’s all-time winning list with 95 career victories, received the Southwest Regional Senior Player of the Year Award by earning a record of 31-8 this season. She is currently the 80th-ranked singles player in the nation and a part of the third-ranked doubles team.

“I’m extremely happy for Ana,” Minnis said. “She definitely deserves this honor, she’s had a great career and an outstanding senior season. It is quite an honor to be bestowed with this award by all of the coaches in the region, and it shows how she demands a lot of respect with both her attitude and sportsmanship.”

The 32nd-ranked LSU Lady Tigers will take on the 42nd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at noon (Central Time) in Malibu, Calif.
