BATON ROUGE — Former LSU women’s basketball all-American Cornelia Gayden has been named to the Orlando Miracle training camp roster, the team announced on Tuesday.
Take a look at Gayden’s LSU bio and career stats.
Gayden, a native of Bogue Chitto, Miss., played at LSU from 1992 to 1995 and she was a three-time first team all-Southeastern Conference selection for the Lady Tigers.
Gayden is one of 18 players on the Miracle’s training camp roster. The Miracle roster, which also includes former Lady Tiger Elaine Powell, must be trimmed to 11 active players by May 28.
In four years with the Lady Tigers, Gayden scored 2,451 points, which still ranks third in school history. Her 337 career 3-point goals stood as an NCAA record until last season. Gayden, however, still holds the NCAA record for 3-point goals in a game with 12 against Jackson State on Feb. 9, 1995. In that game, Gayden scored a school-record 49 points, a mark that stands today.
Gayden was a second team all-America selection by the Women’s Basketball News Service as well as a third team all-America pick by the Associated Press in 1995. As a senior, Gayden averaged 25.8 points and 8.4 rebounds a contest. Gayden averaged 22.3 points and 8.1 rebounds a game in her four
years at LSU.
In her 110-game LSU career, Gayden scored 40 or more points three times and 30 or more points 21 times. She’s also the only player in school history to record a triple-double, doing it twice. Gayden had 43 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists against TCU on Jan. 2, 1995 and she followed that with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 7, 1995.
Gayden played one year in the ABL with the Atlanta Glory before playing overseas for two years. Gayden received her degree from LSU in 1999 and she is currently a teacher at Dunham Middle School in McComb, Miss. Gayden also serves as assistant girl’s basketball coach at McComb High School.
