BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s golf team, ranked sixth in the nation and off a strong spring campaign, was named the No. 1 team in the South District for the NCAA Regional Championships which begin May 11.
The Tigers are one of 24 teams to advance to the NCAA East Regional, May 11-13, at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. LSU advances to the Regional round for the sixth consecutive year, a school record, and will be trying to make the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships for an unprecedented third consecutive year.
A minimum of 11 teams will advance from both the East and West Regionals (slated for the same dates in Tempe, Ariz.). to the Division I championships with two other team spots to be awarded to one of the regionals based on national rankings, prior to the event.
In all, 10 Southeastern Conference teams advanced to the East Regional from one of the three Districts. In the South, LSU was the number one seed, followed by Georgia, SEC Champion Auburn, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Furman, Central Florida, South Florida, Tulane and Arkansas.
From the Midwest Region, the teams are Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana and Northwestern. The eight teams by seeds from the Mid-Atlantic/East District are: Duke, Wake Forest, Tennessee, North Carolina, Campbell, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Penn State.
LSU earned the top seed in the South after posting a 96-25 record, but more importantly a 57-5 mark in the five spring tournaments. That included a victory in the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in April at the University Club by 31 strokes over qualifier South Florida.
Also in the spring, LSU had no finish worse than third and that was in the first tournament at Gainesville, Fla. LSU finished second at South Carolina, Georgia and at the SEC Championships in Rogers, Ark., in its last start.
