Tiger Golf Remains In Fourth at SEC Championships

KILLEN, Ala. — After two rounds of the Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championship held at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club, LSU remained in fourth place at 20-over par 596 after Saturday’s action in Killen, Ala.

The Georgia men’s golf team shot a 10-under-par 278 Saturday to extend its lead by nine strokes, 564-573, over second-place Auburn. 

The participating teams will play the final 18-hole round on Sunday. The first groups will tee-off at 8 a.m. CDT.

Following second-place Auburn is Mississippi State in third place at 584, shooting 287 on Saturday, and LSU in fourth place at 596, shooting 295 on Saturday. Ole Miss is fifth at 597, shooting 293 on Saturday and Alabama is sixth at 598, shooting 293 on Saturday.

After holding a tie for the individual lead after one round, LSU’s John Humphries ballooned to 77 on day two, yet still leads the Tigers at 3-over 147 and in a tie for 12th place overall. Alan Morgan is one shot back at 4-over 148 (15th place) and Jason Humphries is in 17th at 5-over 149.

Jeremy Wilkinson is tied for 33rd at 8-over 152 while Craig Taylor is in 52nd at 157.

Individually, Mississippi State’s Alex Rocha leads the field with a six-under-par 138, shooting a 68 on Saturday. Rocha has a two-shot lead over Auburn’s Roland Thatcher and Georgia’s Erik Compton, with scores of 140. Thatcher shot a 68 on Saturday while Compton tallied a 69.

Rocha’s two-day total of 138 is tied for the sixth best after 36 holes in the history of the SEC Championship.

Jason Dufner of Auburn and Michael Morrison of Georgia are tied for fourth place after the second round with 141 totals. Dufner shot a 69 on Saturday while Morrison scored a 71 in the second round.

Georgia extended its team lead by having all five of its golfers shoot par-or-better for the second straight day. Following Compton’s 68 and Morrison’s 71 Saturday were scores of 70 by Bryant Odom, who is in sixth place after the second day at 142, Nick Cassini’s 72 and Bubba Watson’s 69. In the SEC Championship, only the top four of the five scores count towards the team total.
