BATON ROUGE — LSU softball player Stacey Newton and football player Louis Williams were selected by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as 2000 National Strength and Conditioning All-American Athletes.

Newton, a senior center fielder from South Carolina, is a three-time recipient of this award, being named All-American in 1998 and 1999. Newton was also named All-Southeastern Conference in 1997-98 and was chosen as a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1998-99.

“Stacey is a model athlete whose work ethic and charisma are contagious on and off the field,” said assistant strength and conditioning coordinator Curtis Tsuruda.

Williams is a three year letterman for the football team on the offensive line at left tackle for LSU. Williams was also a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1998-99.

“Louis works very hard in the weight room and takes his lifting seriously,” said strength and conditioning coordinator Tommy Moffit. “He is very conscientious with his technique as he tries to perfect it. This reward reflects his hard work in the weight room and his intensity.”

This prestigious award program recognizes outstanding male and female athletes who have excelled in their strength training and conditioning. Selections are also based on community involvement, academic achievement and leadership qualities.
