Fremin Named SEC Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU softball senior first baseman Shaunte’ Fremin was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

“Shaunte’ hit a Babe Ruthian home run against Mississippi State on Friday,” said LSU hitting coach Mark Lumley. “Her doubles came in clutch situations. She put on a clinic this week. I was proud of her.”

Fremin helped lead the Tigers to six victories for the week versus top-20 teams, two at home against No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette and four on the road at No. 19 Mississippi State.

Her batting average for the six games was .444 with eight hits, four doubles, one home run, three runs scored and 10 RBI. Prior to Saturday, she had five doubles for the season. Fremin hit four doubles in the double header on Saturday.

At first base, Fremin had 49 putouts and one assist for the week. Overall for the Tigers, Fremin is hitting .301, improving her average 30 points for the week. She also leads the team in putouts with 232 and has 14 assists.

Riding a 17-game winning streak, the eighth-ranked LSU softball team will play Louisiana Tech in a double header at Tiger Park on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.

“We are going to play this game as if it were a conference game,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “We have had success lately in all areas, and the girls are getting into a routine. I remind them to play one game at a time, each as if it were the most important.”

The Tigers are looking to break their previous winning streak record of 18 that was set last year on April 24.

Last season LSU swept a double header in Ruston by scores of 1-0 and 6-2. Against all Louisiana schools, LSU is 42-2.

In game one of 1999, Stephanie Hastings hit a single in the seventh inning to send home Ashlee Ducote to score the Tigers only run. Pitcher Sophia Mount pitched six innings for LSU only allowing three hits and and fanning eight. She was relieved by Britni Sneed in the seventh who allowed no hits and struck out two.

The Tigers had 11 hits in game two against the Lady Techsters off pitcher Paige England. Tara Asbill and Ashlee Ducote each had a double in the contest.
