Lady Tigers Defeat Auburn on the Road, 5-1

AUBURN, Ala. — The LSU women’s tennis team picked up its third Southeastern Conference win of the season Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Auburn Lady Tigers in Auburn, Ala.

“We played very good tennis today,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Every SEC team is tough to play on the road, but today we just came out and executed well enough to pick up a big win.”

With the win, LSU improved to 13-8 overall and a 3-7 mark in the SEC. Auburn dropped to 1-8 versus conference opponents and an overall record of 6-14.

The Lady Tigers clinched the match in singles play by winning on five of the six courts. Auburn’s lone win came on court No. 4 as Simone Jardim defeated LSU’s Tami Botts, 6-0, 6-1.

LSU’s 11th-ranked Bruna Colosio and 68th-ranked Ana Paula Mores have both won at least 30 singles matches this season. Colosio’s overall record is 31-6, while Mores has one less win at 30-6.

Colosio extended her winning streak to 12 straight matches Sunday with a 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(3) win over Auburn’s Andrea Piski on court No. 1. Mores also kept her winning streak alive against Auburn by defeating Katia Illarionova on court No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Mores has won her previous 10 singles matches.

“Ana and Bruna are playing awesome tennis right now,” Minnis said. “But we still have one tough regular season match left to play and then the SEC Tournament. So I hope that they can keep playing the way that they are now for the final part of the season.”

Freshman Lauren Haddix, and juniors Fernanda Tsucamoto and Mandy Rice were also victorious in their matches against Auburn. Haddix won on court No. 5, 6-3, 6-0, Rice picked up the win on court No. 6, 6-3, 7-6(7), and Tsucamoto defeated Auburn’s 94th-ranked Lucy Altman, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 3 singles.

With the match already decided in favor of LSU, 5-1, the teams declined to play the doubles round. The extra time allowed the Lady Tigers to catch their flight back to Baton Rouge.

The LSU Lady Tigers will next be in action Saturday, April 15, as they take on the 17th-ranked Ole Miss Lady Rebels. It is the Lady Tigers’ final home match of the season and will begin at 1 p.m.

LSU’s lone senior, Ana Paula Mores, will be honored prior to Saturday’s match for all of her hard work and dedication during her illustrious four-year career as a Lady Tiger.
