KNOXVILLE, TENN. — The 11th-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team upset No. 9 LSU for the second time this year with a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops LSU to 16-3 on the year and 6-2 in conference play. Tennessee improves to 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the Southeastern Conference.
LSU started the match well by winning the doubles point for the 17th time in the 18 matches doubles has been played.
The 14th ranked duo of Michal Chmela and Dan Kiernan clinched the point with a 9-8 (4) win at No. 1 over No. 24 Mark Parsons and Adam Carey.
The team of Jesse Smatt and Ajay Ramaswami provided the other doubles victory as they upset 32nd-ranked Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles only Chmela was able to score a victory as his opponents Tate Roberts retired at the No. 2 spot. Chmela led 4-1 in the first set when Roberts retired.
Each of Tennessee’s four ranked singles players won, at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as the Volunteer singles line up proved to be to strong for the Tigers.
