NEW ORLEANS — The LSU baseball team continued to play well both offensively and defensively as the Tigers pounded out a 10-2 win over the University of New Orleans in Zephyr Field in New Orleans Tuesday night.
The Tigers improved to 22-10 on the season and will next take on Southern University in a game that was scheduled as a make up for LSU’s rainout with Vanderbilt earlier in the season. The Tigers and Jaguars will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.
UNO fell to 17-11 on the season. The losing pitcher for the Privateers was starter Ryan Lousteau, who pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on six Tiger hits. Three of the runs charged to Lousteau were unearned in the LSU four-run third inning.
LSU went ahead in the third inning with four runs, however, UNO answered with two of their own in the bottom of the third against LSU starter Bo Pettit.
Pettit would be relieved by Brian Tallet to start the fourth inning, and Tallet pitched three scoreless innings to earn his sixth win of the season against two losses. Jason Scobie pitched the seventh and eight innings before Weylin Guidry closed out the game in the ninth.
Offensively, LSU picked up 16 hits off of four Privateer hurlers. No. 9 hitter Ray Wright went 4-for-5 including his third home run of the season to lead the Tigers. Wally Pontiff hit his fourth home run of the season for the Tigers. Wright and Pontiff, along with Jeremy Witten, Ryan Theriot, Blair Barbier and Jeff Liapri, combined to hit 15-for-28.
The only negative aspect of the game for the Tigers was the end of Brad Cresse’s 24-game hitting streak, as the catcher went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.
