Women’s Tennis Set to Take on Purdue

BATON ROUGE — The 30th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team will host the Purdue Boilermakers Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.

“Purdue is a very talented team,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We’re going to have to come out and play solid tennis in both the singles and doubles rounds. If we can do that and play the way that I know we are capable of playing, then we should be able to pick up the victory.”

LSU (10-7, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) will look to end a two-match losing streak in Saturday’s match against the Boilermakers. The Lady Tigers are coming off of a two-match road trip in which they were defeated in close contests by SEC foes 20th-ranked Tennessee and the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. LSU lost both matches by the final score of 5-4.

“We’re in a little bit of a slump right now,” Minnis said. “We played good tennis against both Tennessee and Arkansas, but we just didn’t close out the matches very well to get the wins. That makes this match versus Purdue very important in that we need to get back on track with a victory.”

Purdue has an overall record of 6-9 this season and is also in the midst of a two-match losing streak. The Boilermakers were defeated by their Big Ten Conference rivals 14th-ranked Northwestern (7-0) and the Fighting Illini of Illinois (2-5) in their previous two matches. Purdue is currently the 64th-ranked team in the nation.

LSU will be led by its two ranked singles players, No. 11 Bruna Colosio and No. 68 Ana Paula Mores. Colosio has won her previous eight singles matches to improve to 27-6 in 1999-00, while Mores has an overall record of 26-6 and is currently on a six-match winning streak.

In doubles, the combination of Mores and Colosio are the 10th-ranked team in the nation. Mores/Colosio have compiled a 17-6 doubles record this season.

The LSU Lady Tigers and the Purdue Boilermakers will meet for the first time in history Saturday at noon in the “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
