Softball Sweeps Florida, 4-0 and 6-3

BATON ROUGE – The No. 9 LSU softball team swept Florida in a double header 4-0 in the first game and 6-3 in the second game.

LSU is now 25-7 for the season and 5-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Florida fell to 28-14 for the season and 2-4 in SEC play.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third when third baseman Ashlee Ducote hit her fifth home run of the season to put the Tigers up 1-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, center fielder Stacey Newton singled to start the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Stephanie Hastings. Left fielder Dee Douglas and shortstop Tara Asbill both scored on a single to right field by Ducote to put LSU up 4-0.

Tiger pitcher Ashley Lewis picked up her ninth win of the season retiring seven batters at the plate and only giving up one hit to the Gators. The LSU bats combined for nine hits off of Gator pitcher Beth Dieter. Ducote and Newton were both 2-for-3 at the plate.

In game two, Florida struck in the first with a double- play sacrifice fly by right fielder Ashley Boone to score Jennifer Mossadeghi to put Florida up 1-0.

The Gators’ second run of the game was a solo home run by Boone, her 10th homer of the year.

The Tigers had runners Douglas and Asbill on base in the bottom of the third with Ducote at the plate. Ducote proceeded to hit her sixth homer of the season to put the Tigers ahead of the Gators 3-2 off pitcher Renise Landry.

Florida tied it up in the top of the sixth when catcher Andrea Zimbardi singled home pinch runner Jenn Brown. The Tigers then stopped an attempted squeeze bunt when Tiger pitcher Britni Sneed fielded the play and threw base runner Jennifer Lutsi out at the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth the Tigers answered back when pinch runner Tayrn Perry scored on a single by catcher Jennifer Schuelke. Pinch runner Auburne Ziober scored on a single by Hastings. Asbill then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to send home Jennie Reeves to put the Tigers up 6-3.

Sneed picked up her ninth win of the season striking out eight batters in the process. The Tiger bats combined for seven hits with Ducote going 2-for-3.

The Tigers will play Northwestern Louisiana on March 29 in Natchitoches at 5 and 7 p.m.
