Softball Splits With Auburn in SEC Opener

BATON ROUGE – The No. 8 LSU softball team defeated Auburn 6-5 in game one of the double header but fell 2-1 in the second game Friday night at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.

“Auburn is a good team, and they played well tonight,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “We have to continue to work hard and improve each game to get to the level of play that we are capable of.”

In game one, Auburn scored first in the top of the third when center fielder Ashley Moore reached first on a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Sarah Orozco. Moore then advanced to third on a illegal pitch and then scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. Auburn then loaded the bases for second baseman Jodie Van Ooyen who tripled to right center to score three. Ooyen then scored on a wild pitch to put Auburn up 5-0.

It was the bottom of the fifth before LSU would answer back. Right fielder Dee Douglas bunted for a single and advanced to second on a single by second baseman Stephanie Hastings. Shortstop Tara Asbill then reached on an error by the pitcher, Douglas scored. Third baseman Ashlee Ducote was intentionally walked to load the bases. First baseman Shaunte’ Fremin then picked up the RBI when she singled to center field to score Hastings. Center fielder pulled off a squeeze bunt to score Asbill. Ashley Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to score Ducote. Catcher Jennifer Schuelke then ripped a double to left field to score Newton and Perry and put the Tigers ahead 6-5.

The LSU Tigers would hold the lead for the next two innings to pick up the win. Pitcher Julie Stashko picked up the win improving her record to 5-0. Lewis went four and two-thirds innings for the Tigers with four hits and three strikeouts. Britni Sneed pitched two innings giving up only two hits and striking out four.

In game two, Auburn once again scored first with a solo home run by center fielder Ashley Moore in the top of the third to put them up 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, LSU tied the score at 1-1 when Douglas singled to center field to start the inning. She then stole second and third to set Hastings up for a sacrifice fly to right field to send Douglas home.

In the top of the seventh, Auburn struck again when Mary Petrie doubled to right field. Kim Freeland pinch ran for Pitre and scored on a single by third baseman Kimball Pratt to put Auburn up 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.

LSU could not pull it off in the bottom of the seventh and picked up its first conference loss of the season.

Sneed went seven innings for the Tigers with 10 strikeouts.

LSU and Auburn will play tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m. at Tiger Park.
