ATLANTA, Ga. — LSU head coach John Brady and forward Stromile Swift were honored as Southeastern Conference Coach and Co-Player of the Year Tuesday, the Associated Press announced.
Vanderbilt’s Dan Langhi was also named Co-Player of the Year by the AP.
In addition to the AP writers’ selections, the SEC Coaches announced that Brady was selected as the SEC Coach of the Year and Stromile Swift was on the First Team All-SEC. Langhi was named SEC Player of the Year by the coaches.
LSU center Jabari Smith, who is making his homecoming in Atlanta this weekend for the SEC Tournament, was named an AP Second Team All-SEC and an SEC Coaches’ Second Team All-SEC.
Freshman point guard Torris Bright was named AP Third Team All-SEC and selected as the Co-Freshman of the Year by the SEC Coaches, along with Arkansas’ Joe Johnson.
Brady became the first men’s basketball coach since 1989 to win a Coach of the Year award. Dale Brown, who led the Tigers for 25 seasons, was the United Press International selection in 1989. He won four Coach of the Year in 1973, 1979, 1981, 1989.
With Swift and Smith selected to the SEC Coaches’ All-SEC Team, LSU put two players on this list for thr first time since 1992-93 when Geert Hammink and Jamie Brandon were honored in the same season.
The three Tigers on the AP All-SEC Teams — Swift, Smith and Bright — were the most since 1989-90 (Chris Jackson, 1st; Shaquille O’Neal, 1st; and Stanley Roberts, 3rd).
In 1990, there were a school record four Tigers named to All-SEC teams, the fourth being Maurice Williamson who was named to the Third Team by the UPI.
