SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament Scenarios

Information courtesy of SECsports.com

The following information takes a look at the Southeastern Conference tie-breaker procedures for the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament and how those tie-breakers could play out following the final weekend of conference games.

For a two-team tie: 1. head-to-head; 2. division record (10 games); 3. record vs. No. 1 team in divisionproceeding through the No. 6 team if necessary; 4. non-division record (6 games); 5. record vs. No. 1 team in the opposite division proceeding through the No. 6 team if necessary; 6. coin flip by the Commissioner.

For a three-time tie: 1. head-to-head among the tied teams; 2. division record (10 games); 3.record vs. No. 1 team in divisionproceeding through the No. 6 team if necessary; 4. non-division record (6 games); 5. record vs. No. 1 team in the opposite division proceeding through the No. 6 team if necessary; 6. coin flip by the Commissioner.

Once a three-team tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreakers go in effect.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP

  • Florida can win the SEC and Eastern Division titles outright (and obviously the Eastern Division No. 1 seed) with a win at Kentucky. Florida is the only team that can win the SEC title outright since a win would give the Gators a 13-3 conference record.
  • Any combination of Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and/or LSU ending the regular season with a 12-4 conference record would give each team a share of the SEC title and each school would receive a championship trophy.

EASTERN DIVISION

  • Florida can win the SEC and Eastern Division title outright (and obviously the Eastern Division No. 1 seed) with a win at Kentucky.
  • If Florida wins at Kentucky and Tennessee wins at Georgia…Tennessee will be the No. 2 seed at 12-4 and Kentucky will be the No. 3 seed at 11-5.
  • If Florida wins at Kentucky and and Tennessee loses at Georgia… Kentucky and Tennessee would be at 11-5. The teams split their season series so division record would be used to break the tie. Kentucky would get the No. 2 seed with a 7-3 division record and Tennessee would be the No. 3 seed due to its 6-4 division record.
  • If Kentucky defeats Florida and Tennessee wins at Georgia….Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee would all be 12-4 and co-Eastern Division Champions. Tennessee would get the No. 1 seed because it would have the best record at 3-1 among the tied teams. Kentucky would be the No. 2 seed with a 2-2 record vs. tied teams and Florida would be the No. 3 seed with a 1-3 record vs. the tied teams.
  • If Kentucky defeats Florida and Tennessee loses at Georgia… Florida and Kentucky would be at 12-4 and co-Eastern Division Champions. The two split their season series so division record would be used to break the tie. Kentucky would get the No. 1 seed with a 8-2 division record. Florida would be the No. 2 seed because of its 6-4 division record.
  • If Georgia defeats Tennessee and South Carolina loses at Vanderbilt…Georgia and South Carolina would be tied at 4-11. The two split their season series so division record would be used to break the tie. Georgia would be No. 5 seed with a 2-8 division record and South Carolina would be the No. 6 seed due to its 1-9 division record.

WESTERN DIVISION

  • If Mississippi State defeats Alabama and Ole Miss loses at LSU…Ole Miss and Mississippi State would be tied at 5-11. Mississippi State would be the No. 5 seed since it swept Ole Miss in the season series. Ole Miss would be the No. 6 seed.
  • If Alabama wins at Mississippi State and Arkansas defeats Auburn…Alabama and Arkansas would be tied at 7-9. The two teams split their season series and would have the same division record at 5-5 so it would go to record vs. the No. 1 through No. 6 teams in the division. Both teams would have the same records vs. each team in its division: both teams lost to LSU (No. 1 seed), split with Auburn (No. 2 seed), split with Ole Miss (No. 5 or 6 seed) and swept Mississippi State (No. 5 or 6 seed).
  • Both teams have the same record vs. the Eastern Division at 2-4 so tie will be broken among the top three seeds in that division since Alabama defeated Tennessee and Arkansas lost to Tennessee (Both Alabama and Arkansas lost to Florida and Kentucky). So Alabama would be the No. 3 seed and Arkansas would be the No. 4 seed.
  • If Alabama loses at Mississippi State, Auburn defeats Arkansas and Ole Miss wins at LSU… Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss would be tied at 6-10. The three teams split their season series and would have the same division record at 4-6 so it would go to record vs. the No. 1 through No. 6 teams in the division. Ole Miss would have split with LSU (No. 1 seed) while both Alabama and Arkansas lost to LSU twice so Ole Miss would be the No. 3 seed.
  • Now, since Alabama and Arkansas would be still tied at this point, the two-team tie-breaking process would be used. The two teams split their season series, would have the same division record at 4-6 and both lost twice to the LSU (No. 1 seed). Alabama split with Auburn (No. 2 seed) while Arkansas lost Auburn twice so Alabama would be the No. 4 seed and Arkansas would be the No. 5 seed.
