BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Katrina Hibbert and Marie Ferdinand have both been selected first team all-Southeastern Conference, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The honor marks the third time that Hibbert has been named to the first team all-SEC squad, while the award is the first for Ferdinand.
Hibbert, who joins only Joyce Walker, Pokey Chatman, and Cornelia Gayden as the only three-time first team all-SEC selections in school history, currently ranks among the top 10 in the league in seven categories. Hibbert’s 14.7 points a game are 10th in the SEC and she’s third in
assists, fourth in steals and second in 3-point field goal percentage. Hibbert, who was named to the freshman all-SEC team in 1997, was selected first team all-SEC in 1998 and 1999 as well.
Ferdinand, who was named the SEC Player of the Week on Monday, leads the SEC in steals with 2.8 a game and her 17.9 points a contest ranks second in the SEC. In 14 SEC games this season, Ferdinand has scored at least 20 points eight times, including five of LSU’s last six games.
The two first team all-SEC selections for LSU marks the first time since 1997, and only the fifth time in school history, in which the Lady Tigers have had two players named to the squad.
In addition to Hibbert and Ferdinand’s honors, sophomore center DeTrina White was selected second team all-SEC. White currently leads the SEC in four categories, including rebounds (9.0), field goal percentage (62.2), offensive rebounds (3.9) and double-doubles.
Georgia’s Kelly Miller was named the SEC Player of the Year, while Mississippi State’s LaToya Thomas earned Freshman of the Year honors. Mississippi State coach Sharon Fanning was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Bulldogs to a 20-6 overall mark and an 8-6 league record.
