Gunter Named Naismith Coach of the Year Finalist

BATON ROUGE — LSU coach Sue Gunter has been selected as one of 15 finalist for the Naismith College Basketball Coach of the Year.

The winner, selected by Naismith’s National Advisory Board members, NCAA Division I coaches, former Naismith winner, NCAA Division I conference commissioners and media representatives, will be presented with the award April 8 in Atlanta.

Other finalist include four-time winner Pat Summitt of Tennessee, two-time winner Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, Leon Barmore of Louisiana Tech, Vivian Stringer of Rutgers, Andy Landers of Georgia, Joan Bonvicini of Arizona, Joe Ciampi of Auburn, Bill Fennelly of Iowa State, Mark French of Cal-Santa Barbara, Gail Goestenkors of Duke, Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame, Rene Portland of Penn State, Marsha Sharp of Texas Tech and Kay Yow of North Carolina.

Currently, Gunter has the Lady Tigers ranked No. 10 in the nation in the Associated Press and LSU is 22-5 overall and finished third in the Southeastern Conference with a school-record 11 league wins.
