Women’s Tennis Falls to Florida State, 5-4

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The 24th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team came up short Monday against the 19th-ranked Florida State Seminoles by the score of 5-4.

“The girls played their hearts out today, but we just didn’t have enough left in doubles to get the win,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Even though we lost today, I am still extremely proud of the way that the team performed on this road trip.”

The Lady Tigers dropped to a 7-3 record on the season, while Florida State improved its overall record to 7-2. LSU’s loss was its second road loss in three days. The Lady Tigers were defeated by fourth-ranked Florida on Saturday.

After singles play the score was knotted up at three wins apiece. Winning matches for the Lady Tigers were 12th-ranked Bruna Colosio, freshman Lauren Haddix, and sophomore Amy McIlhaney.

Colosio won on court No. 1 against Florida State’s 67th-ranked Alida Gallovits in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4). Haddix defeated Ali Weber on court No. 5, 6-3, 6-3, while McIlhaney was also victorious, 6-2, 6-4, on court No. 6 versus Marina Raic.

The Seminoles secured the win in the doubles competition as they outplayed the Lady Tigers on courts numbers two and three. The team of Kia Asberg and Raic picked up the win for the Noles on court No. 2, 8-3, over Fernanda Tsucamoto and McIlhaney.

The clincher occurred at No. 3 doubles as the duo of Jessica Balbuena and Ali Weber finished off LSU by defeating the Lady Tiger’s team of Kelly Craycraft and Haddix, 8-4.

LSU’s 16th-ranked doubles combination of Ana Paula Mores and Colosio picked up the fourth and final point of the match for the Lady Tigers with an 8-6 win over Nanette Duxin and Gallovits at No. 1 doubles. The final score of the match was Florida State 5, LSU 4.

“Florida State is a really good team. They stepped it up today and played better tennis than we did, but we’ll use this past weekend as a learning experience, and it will end up helping us down the stretch,” Minnis said.

The Lady Tigers will next be in action March 3 in Baton Rouge as they host the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
